AI in Higher Education Sparks Ethical Debate Among Academics
As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes the landscape of higher education, a growing chorus of scholars is sounding the alarm over the ethical implications of its integration into university classrooms. The rapid adoption of AI-powered tools—from intelligent tutoring systems to automated grading platforms—is transforming traditional teaching models, but not without raising profound concerns about autonomy, fairness, privacy, and the very nature of pedagogical responsibility.
At the heart of this debate is a seminal study by Zhang Jie, a lecturer at Yulin University’s School of Liberal Arts and doctoral candidate at Sichuan University’s School of Marxism. Zhang’s work arrives at a critical juncture. Governments and institutions worldwide are investing heavily in AI for education. In 2018, China’s Ministry of Education launched the Higher Education Institutions Artificial Intelligence Innovation Action Plan, urging universities to “reconstruct teaching processes” and develop intelligent learning platforms centered on the learner. A year later, then-Minister of Education Chen Baosheng declared that AI would “fundamentally change the time-space scenarios and supply levels of education.” These statements reflect a broader global trend: from adaptive learning systems in North American universities to AI-driven student support services in Europe, the digitization of higher education is accelerating.
But beneath the surface of technological optimism lies a complex web of ethical dilemmas. Zhang argues that while AI promises enhanced efficiency, personalization, and scalability, it also introduces new forms of inequality, erodes human agency, and threatens the intrinsic moral dimensions of teaching and learning.
One of the most pressing issues identified in the study is the phenomenon of “algorithmic black boxes.” When AI systems make decisions about student performance, course recommendations, or even admission outcomes, the underlying logic often remains opaque. Educators and students alike may find themselves subject to judgments they cannot understand or challenge. This lack of transparency undermines what Zhang calls “teaching rationality”—the ability of instructors to exercise informed, context-sensitive judgment in their pedagogical practices.
“Artificial intelligence relies on converting educational realities into mathematical problems,” Zhang explains. “But education is inherently human, relational, and contextual. No algorithm can fully capture the nuances of a classroom discussion, the emotional state of a struggling student, or the subtle dynamics of mentorship.”
When algorithms prioritize quantifiable metrics—such as quiz scores, login frequency, or video watch time—they risk reducing rich educational experiences to simplistic data points. This narrowing effect, Zhang warns, leads to the “homogenization of learners,” where individuality, creativity, and critical thinking are sidelined in favor of predictable, machine-readable behaviors.
Moreover, the increasing reliance on AI intermediaries between teachers and students is altering the fundamental structure of classroom interaction. Traditionally, university teaching has been understood as a dyadic relationship—teacher and student engaging in a shared intellectual journey. Now, a third actor has entered the scene: the AI system. Zhang describes this emerging paradigm as a “three-dimensional interaction” involving teacher, AI, and student. While this triad enables new forms of collaboration, it also diminishes the moral authority and pedagogical presence of the instructor.
“In the past, professors were not just knowledge transmitters but moral guides,” Zhang notes. “They modeled intellectual integrity, empathy, and ethical reasoning through direct engagement. When AI mediates much of this interaction, those relational qualities risk being diluted.”
This shift has significant consequences for the moral function of teaching. The classroom, once a space for ethical formation and character development, risks becoming a technologically optimized environment focused primarily on skill acquisition and performance metrics. As Zhang puts it, “the ethical attribute of teaching is being quietly eroded.”
Another major concern is the impact on educational equity. On the surface, AI promises to level the playing field by providing personalized support to all students, regardless of background. In practice, however, access to advanced AI tools is uneven. Elite institutions with robust IT infrastructure and digitally literate faculty are better positioned to integrate these technologies, while underfunded universities lag behind. This digital divide threatens to deepen existing inequalities between urban and rural campuses, wealthy and poor regions, and well-resourced and marginalized student populations.
Even within a single institution, disparities emerge. Students who are uncomfortable with technology, lack reliable internet access, or come from educational backgrounds that did not emphasize digital fluency may struggle to adapt to AI-driven learning environments. Furthermore, AI systems trained on historical data may inadvertently perpetuate biases—favoring certain learning styles, linguistic patterns, or cultural norms—thereby disadvantaging non-traditional or minority students.
Zhang highlights another troubling dimension: the potential for AI to reinforce “electronic labeling.” By continuously tracking and analyzing student behavior, AI systems generate detailed profiles that can follow learners throughout their academic careers. While intended to support personalized learning, these digital footprints can also become self-fulfilling prophecies. A student flagged early on as “at risk” may be steered toward remedial tracks, limiting their opportunities for advancement—even if their performance improves over time.
“The danger,” Zhang warns, “is that data-driven decisions begin to override human judgment and second chances. Education should be a space of transformation, not prediction.”
Privacy concerns further complicate the picture. AI-enhanced learning platforms collect vast amounts of personal data: not just academic records, but behavioral patterns, social interactions, emotional responses, and even biometric indicators. While such data can enhance learning analytics, it also creates significant risks if mishandled. Data breaches, unauthorized surveillance, or misuse by third parties could have lasting consequences for students’ reputations, mental health, and future prospects.
Zhang emphasizes that the ethical challenges posed by AI in education are not merely technical but deeply philosophical. They touch on fundamental questions about the purpose of higher education: Is it to produce efficient workers, or to cultivate thoughtful, ethical citizens? Should learning be optimized for speed and accuracy, or should it allow for exploration, failure, and growth? And who holds responsibility when an AI system makes a harmful decision?
To address these challenges, Zhang proposes a holistic framework for ethical governance built on three interlocking dimensions: value order, institutional order, and spiritual order. This tripartite model reflects a deep understanding of both systemic and individual aspects of moral life in academia.
The first pillar, value order, calls for a reaffirmation of core educational values. Zhang insists that any AI integration must be guided by principles such as fairness, human dignity, and the pursuit of “complete goodness”—a holistic vision of education that balances knowledge, skills, and character development. He advocates for the central role of socialist core values in shaping China’s educational future, arguing that they provide a moral compass for navigating technological change.
But values alone are not enough. The second pillar, institutional order, demands concrete policies and accountability mechanisms. Zhang calls for the establishment of clear ethical guidelines for AI use in teaching, including transparency requirements for algorithms, data protection protocols, and oversight bodies to review AI applications. He also suggests implementing accountability systems—what he terms “professional accountability” and “disciplinary accountability”—to ensure that educators and administrators remain responsible for decisions, even when mediated by machines.
Crucially, Zhang stresses that AI should serve as a means to achieve educational ends, not an end in itself. “Technology must be subordinate to pedagogy,” he writes. “The ‘complete goodness’ of teaching cannot be reduced to algorithmic efficiency.”
The third pillar, spiritual order, addresses the inner dimension of ethical practice. Beyond rules and regulations, Zhang believes that sustainable change requires a transformation in mindset—a cultivation of moral awareness, professional integrity, and a sense of duty among educators and students alike. This involves fostering a culture of reflection, where teachers regularly examine their use of AI, consider its impact on students, and remain vigilant against dehumanizing tendencies.
He draws on classical philosophical traditions to ground this vision. Citing Aristotle, Zhang reminds readers that true virtue lies not just in doing good things, but in doing them for the right reasons. Similarly, referencing Max Weber, he distinguishes between “belief ethics”—acting based on pure intentions—and “responsibility ethics”—acting with awareness of consequences. In the age of AI, he argues, educators must embrace both.
Zhang’s framework has resonated with scholars beyond China. International experts in educational technology and ethics have praised its depth and practicality. One Western academic, speaking anonymously, noted that “many discussions of AI in education focus narrowly on tools and outcomes. Zhang’s work stands out because it places ethics at the center, not as an afterthought, but as the foundation.”
Others have pointed to the universality of his concerns. “The issues he identifies—algorithmic bias, data privacy, the erosion of teacher autonomy—are not unique to any one country,” said a professor of educational policy at a leading European university. “They are global challenges that require global dialogue.”
Indeed, Zhang’s research comes at a time when universities around the world are wrestling with similar questions. In the United States, faculty unions have raised alarms about the use of AI proctoring systems that monitor students during exams, citing invasions of privacy and racial bias. In the United Kingdom, regulators have called for stricter oversight of AI in admissions processes. Across the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has forced institutions to rethink how they collect and use student data.
Yet, despite growing awareness, comprehensive ethical frameworks remain rare. Many institutions adopt AI tools on an ad hoc basis, driven by vendor promises rather than strategic vision. Training for faculty is often minimal, and student input is frequently absent from decision-making processes.
Zhang’s call for a “systematic governance approach” offers a roadmap for change. He envisions a future where AI enhances, rather than replaces, the human elements of teaching. In this vision, professors use AI to offload routine tasks—grading multiple-choice quizzes, tracking attendance, recommending readings—freeing up time for deeper engagement: mentoring, facilitating discussions, and providing personalized feedback.
Students, in turn, benefit from more responsive and adaptive learning experiences, but retain control over their data and agency in their educational journeys. AI becomes a collaborator, not a controller.
Achieving this balance, Zhang acknowledges, will require sustained effort. It demands investment in digital literacy, interdisciplinary collaboration between technologists and humanists, and ongoing dialogue among stakeholders. But the stakes are too high to ignore.
“Education is not just about information transfer,” he concludes. “It is about forming persons. If we allow AI to strip away the moral and relational dimensions of teaching, we risk losing what makes education truly valuable.”
As universities continue to embrace artificial intelligence, Zhang Jie’s research serves as a timely and necessary reminder: technology must serve humanity, not the other way around.
