As these technologies become increasingly embedded in everyday life, the traditional structures of information dissemination are being fundamentally restructured. No longer confined to institutional gatekeepers or linear broadcasting models, communication today is characterized by dynamic interactivity, decentralized authorship, and immersive experiences. At the heart of this shift lies artificial intelligence—not merely as a tool, but as an environment that redefines how humans perceive, interpret, and engage with the world.
Scholars have long examined media through the lens of environmental influence, a framework rooted in the tradition of media ecology. Pioneers such as Marshall McLuhan and Neil Postman emphasized that media do not simply transmit content—they shape cognition, alter sensory balance, and reconfigure social relationships. In this context, AI emerges not just as a technological upgrade but as a new kind of environment: one that simultaneously alters human perception and reshapes symbolic systems. Recent research by Li Dan from the Internet Information Research Institute at Communication University of China and Pei Shuo from Capital Normal University’s Primary Education College explores this dual transformation in depth, offering a comprehensive analysis of how AI is reconstructing the very fabric of communication.
Their study, published in a leading communication journal, argues that AI functions on two interrelated environmental levels: the perceptual and the symbolic. On the perceptual level, AI extends beyond the sensory augmentation offered by earlier media. While print extended vision and radio extended hearing, AI extends cognition itself. This creates a feedback loop where human intelligence and artificial intelligence co-evolve. The result is a deeply immersive experience—one where the boundaries between virtual and physical realities blur. This shift has profound implications for human agency. But the transformation extends beyond sensory engagement. At the symbolic level, AI introduces a new linguistic and semiotic order. In this symbolic ecosystem, reality is no longer accessed directly but filtered through layers of machine interpretation. As a result, people increasingly understand the world through algorithmically constructed representations. This fluidity challenges the notion of a unified public sphere. Instead of a single arena for rational debate, contemporary communication resembles a fragmented network of overlapping communities, each governed by its own norms, values, and information ecosystems. These communities are not bound by geography or kinship but by shared interests, ideologies, or aesthetic preferences—what sociologists refer to as “elective affinities.” Algorithms further reinforce these affiliations by personalizing content delivery, creating echo chambers where dissenting views are minimized or excluded.
While this pluralism empowers marginalized voices and fosters niche creativity, it also introduces new vulnerabilities. The erosion of centralized authority has made it harder to establish shared facts or common narratives. Misinformation spreads rapidly when emotional resonance outweighs evidentiary rigor. Automated bots and deepfake technologies complicate the verification process, enabling large-scale disinformation campaigns. In extreme cases, this fragmentation contributes to social polarization, collective anxiety, and institutional distrust.
These challenges place unprecedented pressure on media governance. In the past, regulatory frameworks focused on controlling content at the point of production—licensing broadcasters, enforcing journalistic standards, punishing defamation. But in an environment where anyone can publish and algorithms determine visibility, traditional regulation is insufficient. The responsibility for managing information flows can no longer rest solely with state institutions or corporate platforms. A more adaptive, multi-stakeholder approach is required—one that balances freedom of expression with accountability, innovation with ethics.
Li Dan and Pei Shuo emphasize that effective media management in the AI era must begin with a redefinition of the manager’s role. Rather than acting as distant overseers, regulators must become active participants in digital culture. One promising direction is the development of digital literacy programs that equip citizens with the skills to critically evaluate AI-mediated content. These initiatives should go beyond basic media literacy to include algorithmic awareness, data privacy education, and ethical reasoning. Schools, community organizations, and tech companies all have roles to play in fostering a more informed and resilient public.
At the same time, there must be greater transparency around AI systems themselves. Users have a right to know how their data is used, how decisions are made, and when they are interacting with machines rather than humans. Explainable AI (XAI) and open-source auditing tools can help demystify black-box algorithms, reducing the sense of alienation that often accompanies technological dependence.
Underlying all these efforts is a deeper philosophical question: What kind of relationship should humans have with intelligent machines? The answer will shape not only communication patterns but the future of human identity itself. Some technologists envision a post-human future where AI surpasses biological intelligence, rendering human oversight obsolete. Others advocate for a human-centered approach, where technology serves as a tool for enhancing autonomy, creativity, and well-being.

As AI becomes woven into the fabric of daily life, it reshapes not only how we communicate, but who we are. To navigate this transformation wisely, society must cultivate both technological competence and moral imagination. It must resist the allure of technological determinism and affirm the primacy of human agency. And it must remember that while machines can process information, only humans can confer meaning.
